General Francis Marion Hotel

Hidden gem. Exceptionally friendly staff, great room, nice restaurant, coffee set up, and it’s a true historic type hotel well done - architects and developers spend a lot to build new as a “boutique” property but this is it and the real deal. 10/10 would recommend for hotel stay. Hotel aside this hotel is located right in town. Lots of walkable and really good restaurant/bar options. It’s a quaint town with a few shops and plenty of grocery stores, pharmacies, fast food, etc. all nearby.

My husband broke his foot, so he’s in a wheelchair / Roller and I’m the luggage carrier. Imagine seeing beautiful stairs and no elevator. Hannah saves the day , her enthusiasm for the historical significance of the place is contagious. She goes down a flight of stairs , through a door where my husband can roll through, and while I’m waiting to see how this plays out, she becomes a magician and produces an elevator , hidden , and I get excited because it really looks like a dumbwaiter - I just walked back into a prior time of the gilded age . Instantly I am envious that my husband gets to ride in it , and Hannah continues to tell the history of the hotel. The Ballroom, the Card room, she rearranges furniture so my husband can get through to see it all (I put everything back in place) . Now we are both excited, forgetting to even check in, wondering what she produces next and Hannah did not disappoint , an old operator switchboard ! The original key to the Hotel, in a shadow box. All these treasures , and Hannah looks so young to have this knowledge! We check in , luggage complete , and off we go to explore the area . We come back with Little Debbie Christmas snacks for Hannah, but she’s gone. Shift over. The Hotel is wonderful , and the staff make the little hiccups ( my husband got stuck in the elevator , it just stopped working ) a minute situation.

I lived in Marion for over 50 years and was so proud of the revitalization of the General Francis Marion Hotel. I had returned to Marion on 3 occasions and been extremely fulfilled with all my stays. This past visit I wanted to express my extreme gratitude to Amanda and Sherri for assisting with my bags and their pure grace. It’s a shame you are limited to only five (5) stars for a review. Further, Chef Bull Myers’ kitchen astonished with elevated southern dishes. It warms my heart to know the “Swamp Fox” will always have a room and special place for this traveler. ~JHW

My wife and I have stayed here multiple times (various room types) over the last few years and always enjoy the hotel and proximity to local restaurants. We love motorcycling the area during the day, then being able to walk to eat upon our return. The staff is always friendly & helpful. Look forward to our next stay.

Historic hotel in a central part of town with free parking. Has a nice American restaurant on first floor. Would recommend as a stopover place for long road trips. I needed no prior recommendation. Just walked in and got a room. Receptionist was very accommodating and helpful. Price was reasonable. Room was very clean with subtle romantic vibes. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was spacious. Breakfast was self-serve but good quality with waffles, bagels, yogurt, cereals, fruit, muffins and breakfast sandwiches. I appreciated the multiple creamer options for the coffee including caramel and hazelnut. Mountain side view was a sweet bonus.

Room was great. Old fashioned look to it was nice. The area (city) around the hotel was clean and enjoyable to walk around. The breakfast was generic prepackaged. We decided to skip it and go out for breakfast. The price... $150 plus. Would I do it again? Probably not.

Spent one night here and enjoyed the experience immensely. First, it’s a historic hotel with lots of early 20th Century vibes. Second, its location in downtown Marion can’t be topped as it’s close to some excellent restaurants and shopping. The Lincoln Theater is just two doors away if you’re looking for some culture. Downsides: lots of steps in the lobby and tight parking.

Extremely nice quiet historic boutique hotel in the heart of Marion, Va. Beautifully appointed rooms with spacious bathrooms. Friendly staff. Excellent onsite restaurant. Walking distance to shops, other restaurants, history museum and the historic Lincoln Theater. Continental breakfast was a little on the lighter side but offered everything you could need. Beverage station offered all day. We definitely plan to stay again.
